Interview: Afreen Rahman, software engineer

Recorded July 23, 2017 in Indianapolis, IN | Subscribe

Afreen Rahman is a software engineer. She started her computer coding life as a high school student in Qatar, where she never heard the idea that “women can’t code.” College in India and graduate school in the United States introduced Afreen to this pernicious belief. Now, she fights for gender inclusivity in the computer sciences.

Since our interview, Afreen has started Fabricode, an apparel company for women in tech. She also graduated from her program at Bradley University, and has recently started a position at Microsoft.

Kerry found Afreen in Indianapolis, IN. They talked about women in tech around the world, Afreen’s mission to get more women into the field of computer science, and the strength of hijabi women.
